Runaways
are defined as youth who choose to remain outside of the home without
parental permission.
Running
away is a significant problem in Montgomery
County.
On an average, 5 youth run away each day. Six out of ten runaways are female.
Runaways represent all races and ethnic groups. Runaways typically have a
history of school truancy, academic trouble, breaking curfew, family problems,
abuse or neglect, and past trauma. Out on the streets, runaways are at risk for
drug abuse, criminal activity, rape, prostitution, gang membership, and even
murder.
The Runaway
Prevention Program provides comprehensive and quality community-based services
to runaway youth and youth who are at-risk of running away. The program
provides free counseling for residents of Montgomery
County
under the age of 18 on an outpatient basis. Runaway or at-risk youth receive up
to six months of therapeutic services, which may include individual, family and
group therapy, crisis intervention, clinical case management and referral
services.
