Damamli, an African term meaning a “Beautiful Vision”, is a foster care and independent living preparation program for pregnant and parenting adolescent mothers ages 16-20 who are in the Foster Care System or Department of Juvenile Services System. Damamli is licensed to provide services to a maximum of 24 clients and can accept youth who are pregnant or have no more than two children.
Damamli provides a three-step support system to ensure that clients are equipped with the skills they need to become independent and self-sufficent young women and mothers.
PHASE ONE-FOSTER HOME PLACEMENT
Phase one of the Damamli program provides the mothers with the opportunity to raise their children in a safe and nurturing foster home; while in the foster home, clients work with their foster parent and case manager to begin developing a plan for their future and working on the steps needed to accomplish their goals.
Foster parents in our Damamli program work closely with clients to help them build their parenting and independent living skills. Once they are prepared, Damamli assists clients in transitioning to a supported independent living apartment.
PHASE TWO-SUPPORTED INDEPENDENT LIVING APARTMENT
Phase two of Damamli celebrates the client’s learning of parenting and independent skills through placement in a furnished, supported independent living apartment. Clients are supported in moving forward on the goals established in phase one while continuing to further their parenting and independent living skills. If at any point the client requires more support, they are eligible to be move back to a foster home. During stage two of Damamli, clients work hard continue to make progress towards their goals and grow closer to a higher level of independence.
PHASE THREE-INDEPENDENT LIVING APARTMENT
When a client reaches phase three of the Damamli program, they have shown extreme growth and progress towards their goals, and has displayed the skills necessary to self maintain their own apartment; for most of Damamli’s clients, this is evidenced by their ability to effectively parent, attend school and/or maintain consistent employment. When most clients reach phase three of Damamli, they are close age 21 when they will age out of state care, and the hope is that through their educational placements and employment, clients will be able to maintain their apartments once they leave the program.
