Opportunities to get engaged with Hearts & Homes!

Are you interested in getting involved with Hearts & Homes for Youth and supporting our services? We have listed below a variety of ways you can engage with us! We look forward to hearing from you!

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to make a positive difference in your community. Hearts & Homes for Youth is looking for volunteers to help us with landscaping, painting, house renovations, and other needs at our facilities. We are also grateful for individuals who donate their time, skills, and services to the children at activities for our youth such as the Princess Party! We welcome individuals to volunteer as mentors but require a commitment, a background check, and a security clearance.

Sponsor an Event

Hearts & Homes for Youth is looking for sponsors for our annual HONORS gala in October and golf tournament in May. The success of our events is a result of the contributions of our sponsors! At every event, the money we raise goes directly to the programs that serve the children in our care. As a sponsor, your organization will receive exposure from media campaigns and event promotions. You will also have exposure at the event.

Host an Event

Become a volunteer event organizer by hosting a fundraising or awareness raising event to benefit Hearts & Homes for Youth! Events are opportunities to raise awareness of our mission and bring the community together to support the children and teens of Maryland who we serve.

Examples of events include dinners, brunches, parties, foster parent information nights, and so much more!

Fundraise

Support Hearts & Homes for Youth by holding a fundraiser! Fundraisers are fun opportunities to support our mission by fundraising as a company, individual, or group on behalf of Hearts & Homes. As a company, you can donate a percentage of sales, start a workplace giving & matching campaign, or hold creative events to raise money such as office dress down days and softball tournaments! As an individual, group, or school, you can raise money on behalf of Hearts & Homes with a fundraiser or sale, by creating a fundraising page online, or auctioning an item.

Support Our Foster Parent Recruitment

Hearts & Homes for Youth is looking for individuals and families who are willing to offer the gifts of love and sacrifice to youth in need by opening their hearts and homes to a foster child. Foster Parents Receive intensive training, 24 hour support, and the opportunity to provide a teen mom or adolescent youth with love, nurturing, guidance and the chance to heal from past hurts. You can support our campaign by hosting an event, referring friends who are interested in fostering, and helping spread the word about our program.

  • If you are interested in being a foster parent or helping us recruit foster parents, please contact Maureen Rodgers and mrodgers@heartsandhomes.org

Host a Youth for a Day

Invite a young person to your place of work, to shadow you and learn more about your business. Show them how to conduct operations in your place of work and develop their vocational skills.

Donate

Hearts & Homes for Youth is grateful for your support and appreciates your donations! We greatly appreciate in In-kind donations such as office and school supplies, household items, recreational equipment, and clothes (socks, sweatpants, winter coats, underwear, t-shirts, etc.) You can also make a tax-deductible donation to support our programs, by mail or online.

We will be sharing our kids’ Christmas wish lists soon! This is a great way to give back at a very special time!  More details will be coming soon!

Big Thanks to a Young Supporter!

We are grateful to eight-year-old Adam Hasan who held his first lemonade stand and bake sale at the end of August to raise money for Hearts & Homes for Youth! He raised $180 in one day, with help from his family and support from his neighbors!

Over Labor Day weekend, Adam and his mother, Jannette,  used the proceeds to buy new socks, t-shirts, underwear, and sweatpants for the teens in our care.

In addition to the money he raised, Adam collected donations of children clothes, shoes, toys, and books, which he donated for the young children and toddlers in our care!

This all started when Adam told his mom that he wanted to raise money for an organization and do something good for other kids. They found Hearts & Homes for Youth online, read about what we do, and talked about the kids in our care. Adam decided he likes our mission so he chose us!

We cherish our new supporters and friends in the community and are grateful for the donations for the kids in our care!

Youth get a fresh look for the new year

Over the past few weeks, the youth in our various programs have been treated by local hair stylists and salon artists to hair cuts and designs. The fresh look is a great way to start off the school year and help the youth build their sense of confidence and self worth.

Our young women from Helen Smith Group Home recently visited a few salons in the area where friends of Program Manager Cedric Gordon paid for haircuts for the girls. Their support was overwhelming and very much appreciated! We would like to publicly thank Kimberly Rice, Joan White, Deborah Knight, Kamilah Akilah-Kynard, and one special personal who wished to remain anonymous. The young ladies are starting school feeling good about themselves and we all know self esteem is vital to success!

Thank you so much to Master Barber Stylist Loretta Thorpe who styled the hair of our young men from Avis Birely Group Home and Harriet Tubman Emergency Shelter a couple weeks ago before the Kings of Style event . She came back to Hearts & Homes again last night and gave our boys from John C. Tracey Group Home a fresh look for the school year! They all loved her and love their new ‘dos!

We also have a spouse of a U.S. Marine from Fort Meade to thank for going to Jump Start Transitional Living Group Home and giving our young men fresh hair cuts and styles.

Thank you to everyone in the community who came together to help our kids develop their confidence and esteem!

GoFundUs! Our Rally to Empower Youth!

Hearts & Homes for Youth has launched a GoFundMe campaign to ask for your help to raise money to create a job readiness program and hire a full-time vocational coach who would spend time with the youth at our group homes and the young mothers in our care, to provide them with resume building assistance, vocational training, mock interviews, professional etiquette workshops, job search assistance, educational guidance, computer literacy training, and career advice. The vocational coach would build and maintain relationships with local employers who are willing and able to hire the youth in our care. We need to raise at least $35,000 to hire a full-time vocational coach for one year.

The intended outcome of the job readiness program is for the youth in our care to develop their vocational skills and attain gainful employment. When the youth identify their career interests, the vocational coach would ensure they complete the appropriate industry recognized certifications, such as Certified Control Systems Technician, Certified Automation Professional, Certified Welder, and other certifications to enhance their career capabilities.

The job readiness program would help us advance the mission of our organization, to empower youth and prepare them to make positive life decisions and become independent adults.  A job training program would better enable us to help the youth attain gainful employment, reduce the symptoms of mental health issues, and set them up for success. With a steady income, an improved sense of self worth, and vocational training, the youth will be less dependent on public assistance, more capable of moving out of the realm of poverty, and better able to afford food, shelter, and basic needs.

The Target population is on average 16.9 years old and roughly 69% are male. Our youth come from across the state of Maryland; 36% of the youth come from Baltimore, 25% from Prince George’s County, and 16% from Montgomery County. 82% of the youth are African American, 8% are Hispanic, 7% are Caucasian, and 3% identify as Other/Bi-racial. 100% of the youth in our care are low income.

The youth in the care of Hearts & Homes for Youth have overcome adversity and have been referred to us by the Department of Juvenile Services as an alternative to detention, or by the Department of Social Services to remove them from an unsafe environment. Our mission is to empower and support these survivors, help them build a community of support and acceptance, and help them make positive life decisions so they can become independent adults and reach their fullest potential. A critical component of youth having the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential is an understanding of their ability to provide for themselves.

By attaining practical work experience, the youth will be prepared for the current needs of the labor market, link their competencies with employers’ needs, build a supportive community for themselves, and develop a sense of worth, motivation and responsibility. By helping the youth develop an understanding of the value of their time and work, the vocational education may minimize the dropout rate, increase financial independence, and set the youth up for success in the long run.

Please help us provide this life changing program for all of the youth in our care!
