Hearts & Homes on the Hill

4Today Hearts & Homes held a reception at the House Office Building in Annapolis where we shared our work with old friends and new supporters. We enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch provided by Red, Hot & Blue and spoke with Maryland’s delegates, senators, aides, and interns about our programs, the youth we serve, and how they can get involved.

The reception was held in Room 170, hosted by Hearts & Homes supporter Delegate Kirill Reznick. We were fortunate to have the support of his engaging staff members who helped us greet guests such as delegates Brett Wilson, Barrie Ciliberti, Kevin Hornberger, Tony Knotts,  Seth Howard, Angela Angel, Johnny Mautz, Diana Fennel, Vanessa Atterbeary, David Moon, Guy Guzzone, Sheree Sample-Hughes, and many others.

Some of the guests wrote caring and supporting notes on a poster board for the youth. Hearts & Homes will frame this poster and hang it at our office for all the kids to see.

The children in our care understand the words of support and you can see in their eyes the difference it makes. We are grateful to the delegates, senators, aides, and interns who took the time to come learn more about Hearts & Homes and the children in our care, and for sharing their words of encouragement and support.

Before the reception, Hearts & Homes attended the Morning Session at the State House. We were very moved by one of the lines in the opening prayer: “each day is a gift, each hour a blessing.” These words align with our mission, to treat as child in our care as if they were our own, and is a great reminder that time is precious. We look forward to working together with our senators and representatives to serve our communities and to make a better tomorrow for the youth in our care.

Princess Party

PP-230x300Join us on July 17, 2015 for our annual Princess Party! The event is an opportunity for the girls and young women of Hearts & Homes for Youth to pick an outfit, get dressed up, and feel like princesses!

Hasn’t every female, at one time or another, dreamed of being “Princess for a Day”? The young ladies of HHY have that experience thanks to Susan Davis, wife of devoted HHY Board Member Larry Davis!

“I was just purging, going through my closet, and I found I had dresses,” Davis recalls. “A lot of them had tags on them, and I thought, I can do something with these dresses.”

All of that turned into Princess Party – and an entire office floor transformed into a shopping mall, with not only gowns and shoes and jewelry, but also volunteers to do hair, makeup, and even teach the girls “the walk.” Click here to read more!

At the Princess Party, our young women pick a dress or two, matching shoes and jewelry. Their makeup, hair, and nails are done by local business professionals who volunteer their time. The young women enjoy a delicious assortment of food and attention from all the guests, staff, and volunteers at the Princess Party!

At this event, Hearts and Homes is filled with giggles, happiness, and young women who felt beautiful, confident, and immeasurable self-worth.

The care and attention the volunteers afforded to our young women is priceless! If you would like to get involved, contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org

We hope that the youth leave the party with a fresh sense of confidence and self worth, in addition to formal attire that they can wear to future events and job interviews!

There are many ways you can get involved, from donating gently used suits, shoes, and accessories, to being the dinner sponsor, to volunteering at the event and meeting our boys! If you would like to get involved, contact Vicki Valle at vicki@heartsandhomes.org

Back to School Picnic

10609422_10152655323632112_1320932002858463671_n-300x225Today Hearts & Homes hosted the annual Back to School Picnic, a great way for youth and the Hearts & Homes family to kick off the school year.

Held shortly before school starts, it is a chance for the youth to meet each other and all the staff at Hearts & Homes, get school supplies for the new school year, and enjoy the outdoors.

Hearts & Homes Group Home Program Managers, Counselors, and Social Workers led the fun and welcoming celebration, full of games, sports, activities, and smiles.

Once again, Social & Scientific Systems provided Hearts & Homes with new backpacks filled with school supplies. For years, Social & Scientific Systems have provided the youth of Hearts & Homes with the tools they need to start the school year well prepared.
